Philosophy in the vineyard

Doctorhäuschen

In 1889, the Doctorhäuschen was built, a small vineyard cottage in the half-timbered style. It’s located in a prominent position above Bernkastel in the middle of the famous Berncasteler Doctor vineyard.

Terroir and sustainability are the principles by which we manage our vineyards.

Under terroir, we don’t only mean the soil types of our vineyards, but also the focus on Riesling, the climatic conditions of our vineyards, and the work of our team.

Sustainability has always been a hallmark of our history and tradition. Parcels in Berncasteler Doctor have been in our family for 200 years, or 7 generations, which is true for many of our other vineyards.

The careful use of natural resources is therefore already a principle of our work. We consistently treat the vineyards with care and comply with the requirements for integrated, environmentally friendly viticulture.

Optimal width between rows and selective canopy management provides for light and air and therefore for healthy grapes. In addition, when necessary, we cut out unevenly ripened or excess grapes.

The harvest date is exclusively determined by the requirements of nature:

„Die Guten ins Töpfchen, die Schlechten ins Kröpfchen“ (The good ones go into the pot, the bad ones go into your crop.)

An old principle (from Grimms’ Cinderella) that we like to follow when we selectively pick optimally ripened grapes and thus high-quality, aromatic harvest material.
